Barb Wollan teaches families and individuals about personal finance. She is particularly interested in helping low-income families improve their finances and maintain their family stability. Working with a number of at-risk audiences has made Barb aware of the complex issues and constraints faced by many low-income families.
Barb is a Family Finance Program Specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach where she provides financial education for nine central Iowa counties. She joined ISU Extension in 1995 after serving six years as an educator with the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) at the University of Illinois Extension. Barb also has experience as a classroom teacher and a Family Development Specialist.
Barb holds a master’s degree in Family Social Sciences from the University of Minnesota and a bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education from North Dakota State University.
Barb has developed Volunteer Income Tax Assistance projects to help provide tax preparation services and technical assistance for low- and moderate income wage earners in Iowa. She also has contributed to several retirement publications and curricula, and played a major role in Iowa’s early adoption of the Smart Choice Health Insurance curriculum.
Barb is an active member of the National Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (NEAFCS) and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS) professional associations.
