This webinar was presented by Sara Croymans, Lori Scharmer, and Steve Judd. Croymans is a family resiliency Extension educator with University of Minnesota; Scharmer is a North Dakota State University Extension family economics specialist; and Judd is manager of information technology and distance education at University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension. The webinar was moderated by Dr. Elizabeth Kiss, Kansas State University assistant professor and Extension specialist.

Croymans and Scharmer were part of the team that produced the award-winning Recovery After Disaster: The Family Financial Toolkit. The toolkit has been a recovery resource for disaster survivors across the country since it was first published in 2011. Croymans and Scharmer continue to provide education and resources that help individuals and families prepare for disaster. They and Kiss are members of the eXtension Personal Finance community.

“In early August there was yet another news story about an internet security breach. This time the hackers stole millions of passwords and other security information, according to the story. There is a risk of theft of personal and financial information all the time—during stable and unstable (disaster) times,” Kiss said. “We are also at risk of being unable to access our information when we need it. This holds especially true during times of disaster, but can happen during a personal emergency.”

Judd, an eXtension Network Literacy leader, says that there are several electronic options for storing your important papers and financial records. “While storing financial records digitally is a tremendous convenience, it is important to understand and protect the security of these records. The key to digital security is limited access. Don’t make it easy for would-be thieves to steal your identity or your life savings.”
